Your calculations turned out to be correct.

I tried tom's suggestion using chord length, which would have been perfectly accurate, but I just couldn't get the right answer .. (Not sure I had the formula right... using SIN of half of the angle .. it just didn't give me an answer that was close enough to be realistic...)

I got the answer by tracing the circle and then folding it into eight segments and then measuring the segments. .. Not as scientific, but it did the job, since it just needed to be a rough estimate - once the pieces are glued together, I'm cutting an arc, so a little scrap on either side is no big deal.
