What is simple for a trade educated, certified, experienced gas technician is not simple for a university educated, inexperienced DIY; so it is hard to say if changing a thermocouple is difficult or easy, especially if one can not find it or know what it does. After the thermocouple is changed, you would have no idea if the combustion is correct, you are making poisonous CO, or there is soomething else wrong with the controls or wiring, so just changing parts can be dangerous. Call a pro and be done with it.
