A little stuck on our self? A little bitter not over being "university educated"? That is your own fault. While I would agree some people have no common sense, most have some. Follow some instructions, pay attention to how it is set up before tearing apart, and visualize what needs to happen, and any "university educated DIY'er" with a lick of common sense can figure it out. I would also agree a tradesman with experience is more adept for this task.

However, Fred, go get a thermocouple (from original manufacturer or some place like Grainger) and change it out. Make sure to follow instructions closley. The manufacturer will give very detailed, simple language instructions, probably with pictures. They do this because they know that just like in every other walk of life, there are some "gas technicians" who are idiots with no common sense; and who are not in the field because they are competent, but because it was the first good job they stumbled into.
