old dimmers are merely rheostats, if they're turned all the way on, it's a dead short and wouldn't effect the fan at all. Plus that would not make sense as to why turning on the light would effect the fan.
You would expect that if the dimmer was say 1/2 on and you turned on the light, the fan would slow down, not speed up.
