Antique dimmers are rheostats, "old" dimmers and "new" ones are solid state devices that chop up the waveform. Light bulbs don't care what you send them, they are nothing but a thin string of conductor in a glass bulb, they convert whatever they get into light and heat. Motors go nuts.
