Joe's gas furnace question Posted by Henry in MI on November 8th, 2003 04:54 PM In reply to I have a Question for by Joe on November 7th, 2003 10:36 PM [Go to top of thread]
Joe, all regions of the country are different. For years, the electric company in the Chicago area offered free replacement light bulbs. In this area, there are no free light bulbs and service on a furnce costs $80 to have a tech come in. I have no problem at all with that, but usually my flame sensor goes out once a year or so and this has happened a couple of months after a regular service call was made. No one could tell that it was going bad--but it did.
However, I did learn something interesting along the way. If I go into the service parts distributor and order one flame sensor, it costs $2. If I order 5, it costs $2.50.
Another interesting thing is that the instructions for installing a thermostat, digital or mercury switch, are written on a DIY level. I lose a round Honeywell about every 5 years due to kids bouncing down the hall. A digital may not be as prone to this but I usually want to get the furnace up and running fast. Both kinds are advertised regularly in home center ads and I have replaced the digitals for our kids. It's pretty obvious that the thermostat makers think replacing those can be a DIY job.
