Hunter Heat Pump Problem

The display has a capital letter E. Just one E. The manual on this Model 44428 Auto Temp II Heat Pump programmable thermostat indicates that if the display has EE, HI , LO replace the unit.
I've replaced the batteries, turned the breakers off, reset the heat pumps, reprogramed the unit, set the unit to manual override and it returns promply to "E".
Does anyone know what the E means?
