best bet is to veneer the wood

on yours as i told someone else if the paper seems to be on pretty good then lighty sand to rough it up alittle but not too much then apply some wood veneer. they are very good surfaces and and just needs a light 220 sand over it. oak veneer looks very nice with a stain called winter white over it. its a very pale white and enhances the natural tones in oaks wood grain. as for applying the veneer there are 2 types one with self adhesive and one that you apply a veneer glue both types can be found on the web. I am more partial to the to part method but i've done several cabinets for the beginner the self stick veneer is better.
