blotched stain application

Posted by Johern on November 12th, 2003 09:18 AM

Hello. could use some advice regarding a "fix it" for a blotched stain application.

I stripped an old table of it's paint and spent countless hours preparing it for a finish. The legs and apron of the table are of made of a hard wood but the top and fold-down sides are of soft wood (fir is my guess) By the time I was ready to apply a finish I was "burnt out" and, against my better judgment, applied a minwax directly to the soft wood surface instead of first applying a prestain conditioner. Predictably, the stain was absorbed unevenly and it seems that diligent preparation was all for naught. Can anyone advise on how best to fix my mistake?

Thanks
Johern
