replacing ceramic bath fixtures

The 30 year old ceramic towel bars and toilet paper holder were chipped and cracked. When removed, I discovered they were mounted through drywall with lots of mud, but nothing else to hold them in place -- not to studs, etc. New ceramic fixtures are a little smaller, so the holes in the wall are too big -- creating even less support. Any ideas for installing the new fixtures besides slathering them with more mud and shoving them into place?
