How much weight should be in a full attic?

I have a large attic with hardwood floors. I've
been renting this large space to a family member
& he has filled it with a library of thousands of
books & furniture. I have noticed cracks in the ceiling of my livingroom (30' x 15"), beneath the attic. Is it possible that there is too much weight in the attic? Thanks for any info!
