Paneling

I presume you mean the thin paneling sheets. The only way you are going to lighten the color is by painting, or some variation of that. Almost all of this paneling is a man-made material with a vinyl face.
I would sand to cut the gloss and prime with Zinsser's Cover Stain (oil). Wipe down with liquid deglosser just before priming. Then paint with latex flat paint. This does not reflect so it tends to minimize imperfections.
I have seen this done and it looks nice.
