exposed ceiling joists

We have raised a 7' celing to 8' and removed all the crywall from the ceiling. All the ceiling joists are exposed at this point. We are the top unit of a four unit condo. Is is possible to leave all the joists exposed, paint them out or decoratively leave them as is? I understand that wiring and plumbing lines may have to be creatively concealed.
