3 PRONG TO 4 PRONG Posted by Michael Rizzo on November 16th, 2003 12:13 PM In reply to Changing a 3 prong dryer connection to a 4 prong connection by Jennifer R on November 16th, 2003 08:47 AM [Go to top of thread]
Jennifer, I am no professional appliance repairman but I just converted my dryer FROM a 4 prong back to a 3 prong setup. First keep in mind what the difference is between dryers requiring 3 or 4 prong connections.....I beleive it was that homes prior to 1997 had required a 3 prong (2 hots circuts, 1 ground circuit)connection. Homes built after 1997 were to use the new standard 4 prong setup. The extra circuit added a neutral connection. This ment you still had the existing makeup of circuits (2 hots circuts, 1 ground circuit) but with one additional circuit designed for the neutral. Long story short...follow the directions on the back of the new 4 prong cord package. DO NOT deviate.....it matters espically if you live in a mobile home or some type of travel trailer. They don't always have the best grounding system so the neutral circuit can play a big part. If your cord does not have good instructions then call your local LOWES or HOME DEPOT and their electrical department people should be able to help you out. Remember you MUST always have a ground connection (typically a green connection in the back of the dryer) and, with the 4 prong setup, the ground wires and the neutral wires are terminated seperatly. I have included a link (with pictures too) that you may find helpful. Good luck....Michael
