This is not a simple task. You need a waterproof pan with a slope to the drain, and it needs to go up the wall about a foot and over the curb. You need the drain fitting fastened properly to that pan. Then you need mortar (not thinset) over the pan. At that point you are ready to set tile.
I prefer a hot mopped tar pan. I am a licensed contractor and I do tile work, but I sub out the waterproof pan. That is a speciality. And it need not be terribly expensive.
