One of two things:

1) If you have trees near your septic tank/distribution box, the roots could have pushed the pipes aside. Never have trees around those things, they'll destroy your system over time.

2) (More likely) the oulet pipe(s) from the septic tank tend to "crust over" given enough time. What the cleaners typically do is use a high pressure water jet to blast through this. In either case, it really doesn't sound like a DIY because of the need to have the thing pumped out again.
