Tom is correct. Never allow trees to grow near or on the septic tank area or field.
My bet is on the plugged outlet pipe from the septic tank. If it is made of cast iron, it can develop "black rust" inside that will crust over the inside of the pipe.
You could dig down to the outlet pipe, punch a hole in it, rod it out, and reseal the pipe with a length of plastic pipe snapped over the cast iron pipe and sealed.
Either way, you will have to have the tank pumped first.
Good Luck!
