Can't figure this thing out

I have an old mercury thermostat. I went and bought one of those fancy touch-screen, remote control, programmable thermostats. So I take off the cover to my old mercury thermostat to see that there are a bunch of wires. They all have letter associated with each wire, but they don't all match up with the letter connections on the new thermostat. For example, one connection to the mercury thermostat is labeled xb2, there is no XB2 connection on the programmable thermostat. Any help would be much appreciated.
