I purchased an 1875 house with a dirt basement.
Have removed lots of dirt to expose cement walkways and cement pads for furnace but there is a soft area. Neighbor said there might be a cistern. I want to put in a cement floor. How to proceed?
Are cisterns of that age just open pits or will there be a lid? How deep and wide usually and made of what?
