Banging radiators with steam indicate a steam leak, somewhere. Probably a trap is leaking and you just dont know it yet.
That is why it is so hot when the radiators are not open all the way....I have had every problem there can be with my steam. Steam radiators can be bled and should when repaired.
good luck and just hope the neighbors dont think it's you banging yr head on the wall!
