If your furnace isn't running continuosly trying to heat the rest of your house then it should have the capacity to heat the area temporarily. Really cold days of the year may be a problem though since 1000sq ft is a lot of capacity. Anyway, install registers in the heat ducts that have louvers that close. If you must use it on really cold days and your furnace can't keep up consider a decorative VENTED gas fireplace.
