but understand what ever heat you dirvert into basement will be taken away from heat that used to go other places in the house. so you may have cold rooms up stairs that used to be warm rooms

this can be overcome by haveing a furnace man come in and change pully size on fan blower thereby makeing fan spin faster to blow more air and make up for the defecet]

just get a regester cover and trace onto heat side duct in approate location , cut with jigsaw or whatever and screw the regester with sheet metal screws. you can get adjustable regester that you can close or open when you need

if you scerew up, ducts are easly patched with sheetmetal and screws
