It was most likely because the joints werent taped. The reason for taping the joints is that you create one solid slab of Hardibacker so that if u get movement in any part of the floor, the whole floor will move. What happened probably, is that since you didnt tape the joints, one sheet was moved and the rest didnt move with it, causing the crack.
