refinishing the old floor

Hi,
My husband and I are wanting to take up our old carpeting and refinish the old floor. He says there are sanders you can rent to help the look of the floor. Our floors are about 50 years old and have always been covered with some kind of carpeting.....his grandparents lived here. If using a sanders is there a best way to do it?? Thanks,
