Thermocouples are realatively inexpensive if that indeed is the problem.
However, many gas log sets use a vermiculite (sp) or mineral wool covering over the gas burners to distribute the gas and produce a real looking flame. Sometimes this covering forms a "crust" over it. the result is that sometimes gas will build up under the crust, and then light off all at once, causing a "poof" or "fuump" This small explosion can blow out the pilot flame and cause the unit to shut down.
The solution is to take a poker and loosen up the surface of the mineral wool or vermiculite. This prevents gas pockets from forming and the small "explosions" will go away.
If by "poof" you mean the burner just went off, then you may indeed need a new thermocouple.
Good Luck!
