How to determine if a wall is load bearing?

Hi,

I want to know if you can tell me how to determine if a wall
is load bearing or not. My main concern is that the wall
I am looking at removing runs right down the middle of
two bedrooms and the ceiling is all 2X4s running across it.
The roof is a tar and gravel which may explain why they
used 2X4s for the ceiling. Any help would be appreciated.
