Oxalic acid is also known as wood bleach. Used carefully on the dark sections, it should help to blend in the stains. Lye (sodium hydroxide) is a caustic and will dissolve wood fiber and binding lignins. DONT USE IT. We use caustics in pulping operations for papermaking. The oxalic acid may slightly raise grain, but won't otherwise cause structural damage to the wood.
