I have modern insert style F/P and flue with a brick faced chimney. The chimney is capped with a full width rain cap and has a cricket.
During hard, blowing rains water leaks into the attic and sometimes enters the house. Several roofers have attempted to fix this problem without success. The flashing has been replaced several times as have the shingles on that slope. Even the rain cap has been replaced and sealed.
From the attic, I cannot see any light around the flashing. From the outside, the roof, flashing and cricket appear to be properly instaled/sealed.
During a hard rain, water can be seen running down the brick in various places on all four sides. The down hill side seams to be the worst.
After two years, my builder and I have both become quite frustrated with this problem. After so much effort on the roof and flashing without success, I am wondering if the problem lies somewhere else. Is there anything I am missing? Could water be soaking into the morter then flowing inside the brick below the flashing before leaching out?
