Tile and backerboard

WE had a question on laying backerboard over the linoleum that is down. We have been advised not to take up the underlay and linoleum b/c of asbestos that is in it b/c of the age. Is it ok to just put down the backerboard over the linoleum before laying tiles? Thanks in advance.
