I have two suggestions. Several years ago my six year old son walked into a hog lot in his new reeboks two days before school started. He didn't realize that the flat brown stuff he was walking on was actually liquid manure. I called Iowa State extension in Ames and asked what to do. They suggested washing them like normal, but to add white vinegar to the wash water along with the detergent, so I put in about a cup and washed them. Then they said to sit the shoes out in the sun for several days until the smell (of the manure and the vinegar) was gone. It worked! Don't know if it will work for moth balls, but it's worth a try. Good luck!!!
