Installing a Wood Burning fireplace insert

I have a fireplace insert that I want to put back in the fireplace, previous owner took it out. I repainted it with stove paint. Do I need to install any kind of stove pipe inside, or does it just slide in? The damper is already missing, I presume from when the insert used to be there, thats one of the reasons that I want to put the insert back in. I have all the trim panels, so I would think it should be easy, exept of course the weight of the unit!
