I was a club member in 1996 and returned a book in January 1997. When they repeatly billed me for the book, I sent (certified mail) a letter telling them to cancel membership and that I had returned the book. Since I never heard from them again, I figured everything was OK. Yesterday I received a notice from a collection agency!
Don't do it! Don't join!
