Cellulose vs. Fiber Glass in exterior walls

Posted by Monty on December 3rd, 2003 09:24 AM

Hello,

This is our first winter in our house that was built in 1954, and the bedrooms have been VERY cold. After some investigation, I found that the exterior walls have no insulation whatsoever.

My question is, what is the best insulation to put inside these walls? I've found different comparisons that say one is better than the other, but haven't been able to find any unbiased adviced on either. They always seem to be a study done by a national FG group or a national cellulose group, each slamming the other.

With all the work involved with blowing in the cellulose (drilling holes, blowing, repairing holes, etc.) I wouldn't mind taking down the drywall to add FG batts, especially since I would only have to do 2 walls and could do one room at a time. With renting the blower, I feel like I'd have to do the whole house in one day. With that in mind however, I wouldn't be opposed to the cellulose.

So, that leads to my question, which is better? I would probably go with an R-15 FG batt if I went that way, yet I want to make sure that would be better than the cellulose.

Keep in mind too that the house has always been somewhat damp, so I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't any type of vapor barrier on the ext. walls. The exterior itself is brick and Bedford stone. Also, the attic insulation is OK and looks as though the previous owners had added to it recently (with cellulose).

Thanks in advance for any advice you might have. BRRRRRR!!!
