alternate roofing choices for flat roof

We currently have a very aged flat tar and gravel roof on our apartment building. We have researched therm a shield coatings, roll out rubber think rubber options also. I drove by a home recently that had put what appeared to be a plastic or fiberglass unit over the roof. It looks as if the water runs into a channel and
is diverted to the gutter and this is without any slope. In a way it looked like the red clay tiles, this material was black but looked as if it were a one unit system not individual tiles put into place. Also exlpain the pros and cons of one type over another, how long we can expect it to last and how expensive is it?
