120/240 volt wiring

** I was told one time to think of wiring like plumbing, the volts go through the black wire,(hot) and return on the white. I am not sure how 220 works. **

While not technically correct in an A/C application, you can think of current coming from a black and going to the red wire of a 240 volt supply as creating that 240 volts. Power coming from either the black OR red wire of that same supply but ending up at the white wire will create a 120 volt connection.

To sum it up, between the black and red wire you would get 240 volts. Between the black and white wires you'd get 120 volts and between the red and the white you also get 120 volts. The black and red are the 'hot' lines, the white the neutral.

If you only have the 2 hot wires (black and red) plus a ground in the existing power supply, most new installations would require you to update the branch circuit's wiring. Check local electrical codes or with an electrician.
