In reply to Installing antique Stove by Beverly on December 8th, 2003 11:18 AM [Go to top of thread]

I don't have a great understanding of the turn of the century kitchen stoves, but have seen restored ones in homes. Most now are decorative, or are used in farm homes. I do know they are incredibly heavy and not very practical for routine use, especially in summer (as compared to modern instant-on temperature regulated gas and electric equipment), but can be very interesting and decorative. I was surprised to see you wanted to restore it to a functional stove. Is this the Excelsior out of St. Louis or Baltimore?

The code issues are going to still be an issue if you plan to fire the stove. Also, I have usually known these things to be moved using hydraulic truck carts and pallet lifts. A cast iron cook stove is not something that is easily muscled around, but can be partially disassembled, and obviously they managed to move them without the benefit of motor vehicles and modern lifting equipment in 1897, so good luck to your muscular friends! I'm sure it will occupy a prominent and permanent location in your home.
