my overkill Posted by tomh on December 8th, 2003 12:40 PM In reply to Normally I Agree With tomh...... by Dodgeman on December 8th, 2003 12:27 PM [Go to top of thread]
Thanks Dodgeman. I tend to go for overkill on these things after 10 years of clearing Sierra Cement that used to fall thick and heavy. We had snowfalls that accumulated up to 5-feet in 24-hours (not common, but it happened). Snow blowers less than 8 HP 2-stage were pretty useless on this stuff and eventually I went to the larger end of the equipment spectrum. Even large machines would sometimes choke on the slush at the bottom of the snowpack, especially when it was laden with pine needles.
For most folks, with average midwest snowfall, I have to agree with your assessment. I was also able to clear gravel driveways, but really hated the tossed rocks. At least with the plow, they were in a nice long pile along the drive (LOL). The best accessory is a paved driveway.
The choice of equipment depends a lot on where you live, and the kind of weather you might expect. If you live in the mountainous regions (East or West), your equipment needs are going to be much greater than in the flat lands. I tend to forget. BTW, we moved 40 miles last year and now have no snow at all! Sold the plow and the snowblower, and bought citrus trees. Was this post helpful? Yes: or No:
