sand it out, probally build up of hand grease, some may like it as its a patina from years, like an antique
but you could sand to fresh wood and re finish with stain & polyurathane, lots of work but if it wahat you want , it is your home
could also try denantured alchol and 0000steel wool but test in unnoticeable area first, or some other solvent like trup, paint thinner whatever works and steel wool??? may strip old finish off so test in area you cant see first
