tub drain

installed new plumbing for tub. Tub now drains real slow. I do believe I have a slight incline leading to my main drain. I would like to know does the p trap have to be a certain distance from the drain & overflow tube and does the drain & overflow tube have to match the size of the 1 1/2 pipe leading to main drain, thanks for your help.
