After the contractors do their song and dance and it's usually a good one I say look at your *OLD* furnace and see how well that one is doing! Does it run all the time trying to keep up or is it off a lot? That will give you the best clue as to whether you need another one of that size. Of course you must also consider if the new one is going to be more efficient, if so that will reduce the BTU input rating needed. For efficiency and comfort I like a two stage 92% gas model. Most of the time you run on stage one, it's quieter and it will run the humidifier/air cleaner longer but you have full burn if you need it. Didn't the contractors tell you what contributes to a cracked heat exchanger? Lots of cycling and a too small return duct.
