Had a Step Father that told me once, that if you get critters under your house, or in the attic, the sure fire way to rid your self of them is to get panty hose or house whatever, and put mothballs in them and throw them under the house in different areas, especially where they likee to live. It works great believe it or not. The smell does not permeate the house, and it rids the house of skunks, squirles(sp?), etc. I know, I live in San Antonio by a creek, and I had that problem big time, remember that, I "had" that problem and it seems fairly environmentallly safe to me..
