Ceiling Texture

You should be able to match the texture using aerosol spray texture. I use the Homax water-based texture because the nozzles work well. They also have a fast dry oil-based texture but it is a mess to work with; avoid it.
But if you are trying to match a popcorn texture, you will probably have some trouble. If that were mine, I would remove it. I tell you how on my website at www.bobf.info.
dp's suggestion of practicing on scrap is not a bad idea. And expect to repaint the ceiling to cover the patch. Be sure to use a primer like Zinsser's Bulls Eye 1-2-3 (latex) before painting.
