Color change

In reply to lightening newly finished stained wood by Bari Bargerstock on December 16th, 2003 07:00 AM [Go to top of thread]

While I hesitate to get into color and color change discussions because everyone sees colors differently, materials appear to have different colors with different lighting conditions, and many more problems, my guess is that you will not be able to make much of a change without major effort. The first thing needed is what kind of wood you are working with. Is it pine, oak, walnut or mahogany? They all react to staining differently and, for example, you will not be able to make walnut look like red oak, no matter what you do.

Wood bleaches are available at home centers but the kind and brand of stain used is another factor in what you can do. What brand and kind of stain and color did you use?

One tip is that, with most stains, you can get a pretty good idea what the finished wood will look like by wiping a section with a rag that has mineral spirits on it if you will be using an oil based finish.
