Check the thread about kitchen cabinet odors that is 6 threads above this one. The odor will be on the inside of the piece, not the ourside, probably, and the secondary and interior wood can be coated with shellac in the same way. There may or may not be a reason to refinish the outside, but I would not do this either without a good reason. Using the shellac cut 50-50 with denatured alcohol should be about right and following the safety instructions is important. Shellac is a good product for this because it's use is so reversible.
