but i suppose with the variety of wood filler colors available today you could route out lets say some maple(very light wood) and inlay with some maghoney(very red dark wood) filler putty , wait for it to dry and sand smooth with finish paper and it would look like a faux inlay. this would work good for scroll lines as the grain is hard to see in thin line, larger arers its going to look like filler though as it by nature has no grain in putty filler
real inlaying is not that hard to do if you have a shapr chisel and some time on your hands. is more a matter of sharp tools and time than any paticular skills(other than sharpening chisels)
