harwood floors, help!

We moved into a home 1 yr ago. The previous owner refinished the hardwood floors in the livingroom but failed to put a polyurethane finish on it becuase they had 6 kids, and no where to put them. So now I have stained floors with tons of scratches. How much work do I have to do. My main worry is sanding, how much do I do? I do not want to do it too far. Is it realistic to do it by hand? Fair warning, I have never done this before! Thanks!!
