Best way to accomplish this is to take all parts - front and backs off the walls.
You'll need roughen them up with some light sandpaper and give them a good cleaning.
Hit the bare metal areas with a good rusty metal spray primer. You can then brush paint them with latex - the color of your choice.

I've done this to my own house and they came out very nice.
