You can inexpensively test for asbestos by collecting a sample and having it tested a local lab using polarized light microscopy (PLM). The test is definitive for presence, type and amount of asbestos materials. Look under Laboratory, Analytical in your yellow pages and expect to pay $35 to $35. Deliver the sample in a labled zip-lock bag or film canister. To take a sample, wet the surface to be sampled with soapy water, put the container over it, then scrape a sample into the container.
