Personally I think this is mostly media science. The people who had trouble with asbestos are those who worked in an environment of airborne asbestos dust for a long time. I have worked with it off and on for over 60 years without difficulty.
I remove popcorn wet and have done it many times. Spray with water and scrape it off with a putty knife. Read the question just above yours for more details.
