You want to lay it in line with traffic flow. In a hall (long and narrow), you want to line the hardwood lengthwise. I do not know if there is any data supporting this, but as hard wood is not absolutely flat and even, I would think that over time you would have uneven wear issues if every step grated against the side seams.
